Meet Elizabeth Anyango Okumu, Designer at AnnaOkumuMbogo

My company name is AnnaOkumuMbogo in honor of my mother who passed away in 2000. AnnaOkumuMbogo is a design firm that deals with a wide variety of designs from textiles, to graphics, to exhibition and interior design. The main style that I use depends on the customer's needs, though I have a love for and am currently developing a signature style to focus on

African/Contemporary/Child educational style.

What are your dreams and aspirations?

My ultimate goal is to promote/create African design styles with messages about African origins, African cultural dimensions and African child-friendly communication on moral values.

What was your journey to becoming a textile designer?

At the beginning of my career, I designed for the Coffee Board of Kenya in various capacities including exhibition design (agricultural show stands throughout the country) and design of system documentation (Annual Report, rate card). Armed with exhibition design experience, I went on to create a show stand for National Housing Corporation (NHC) in Nairobi in 1991. I proceeded to work for Government training Institute Mombasa, once again designing system documentation. This time it was Training Programme charts, a Prospectus and a Newsletter.

Over the years I evolved my design processes and nurtured a passion for textile design. While working for Abdulla Leso, I designed 2 USAID Khangas that were aimed at promoting behavior change in the health sector. I also did a Khanga design for Kaysalt Factory to promote self reliance as well as textile designs for A.C.K. Mombasa Diocese.

Although Anna Okumu Mbogo Enterprises deals with a variety of design disciplines, I am particularly passionate about textile design as a tool for visual communication.

Thoughts on the future of Africa's fashion and textiles industry in the next 5-10 years?

If the demand for high quality ready to wear fashion continues to grow in Africa, it will create a demand for quick and flexible Digital Textile Printing production processes, thereby being an advantage for African textile designers. This is because there will be increased demand for their work. The industry seems to be going back to nature and looking to natural textiles from plants, the ocean and food waste to produce sustainable textiles. The opportunities for the Digital Textile Printing sector are enormous ranging from duty free quota, to free market access to the U.S.A, E.U, COMESA and upcoming ACFTA.
